Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919), painting at home.

Also in the Renoir footage are his youngest son Claude, 14, who stands by to arrange the palette and place the brush in his father’s permanently clenched arthritic hand, and Sacha Guitry, the man who recorded both films and who appears midway through, sitting and talking with Pierre-Auguste.

Claude Monet (1840-1926), painting in one of his flower gardens in Giverny. Half a million people visit Monet’s gardens each year during the seven months that they’re open.

The footage was filmed for Sacha Guitry’s 1915 film Ceux de Chez Nous, or “Those of Our Land.”
