Idea generation
Here’s a glimpse of the sketches I’ve made for various projects, and a personal reminder of how much they help with creativity. Using a pen or pencil is the fastest way to explore ideas and their variations because you can play with a much broader range of thoughts than if the same amount of time was spent on a computer.
If there are three or four good ideas that I’m struggling to choose between, I’ll show my client a series of sketches, describing why each is a strong fit and how the ideas can adapt and flex for various applications. But most sketches go unseen, because it’s my job to show what works, not what doesn’t.
As well as working directly with clients, I teach through talks, mentoring, and a range of design books. My latest book, Identity Designed: The Process, is an in-depth examination of the stages many designers work through with their clients. The book shares best practices highlighted by compelling case studies.
Do you have a design project you’d like to talk about? Tell me what your business is, who’s involved, and how you want it to grow. It’ll be a pleasure to hear from you.
