URL ABC

light writing alphabet

An old-school meme for Friday, and the first I’ve taken part in since back in the days of the face behind the blog. URL ABC was started by Tim Van Damme—just type a letter in your browser’s address bar, then list the first URL that appears.

A: acejet170.typepad.com (design blog from fellow resident of Northern Ireland, Richard Weston)
B: bbc.co.uk/football (I was hoping this might show the BBC news URL, but alas, it’s football)
C: cgstudionyc.com (that’s more respectable)
D: davidairey.com (to be expected)
E: easyjet.co.uk (I caught a flight to Edinburgh last Sunday to sort out my new home office come January)
F: football365.com (a theme is developing)
G: edinburgh.gumtree.com (I used Gumtree to search for homes in Edinburgh—the notable result was a time-wasting email chat with a scammer)
H: hellosubsist.com (Michael Kosmicki—one of my book contributors)
I: informationarchitects.jp (architects of online information)
J: jasonsantamaria.com (respected graphic designer in Brooklyn)
K: andrewkelsall.com (friendly, down-to-earth designer)
L: liverpoolfc.tv (tough times for the Liverpool faithful)
M: malmaison-edinburgh.com (hotel I stayed in a few days back)
N: no-spec.com (design students take note)
O: omniplex.ie/cinema/cinema/bangor (my local cinema)
P: paul-rand.com (an ode to the past master)
Q: unnecessaryquotes.com (the ‘q’ for ‘quotes’ pulled this one)
R: readbetweentheleading.com (design podcast by Aaron and Matt)
S: skysports.com/football (football? again?)
T: twitter.com (I’m one of the old-school who uses Twitter on the Web—finding it easier to limit time spent tweeting)
U: uprinting.com (impending sponsor for Logo Design Love)
V: vimeo.com/user1541333 (I’m due another vlog post)
W: winwithoutpitching.com (design business advice from Blair Enns)
X: xe.com (currency converter of choice)
Y: youtube.com (the standard result)
Z: peachpit.com/podcasts/episode.aspx…. (a Jeffrey Zeldman podcast interview by my publisher Peachpit)

Does anyone get an actual Q?

  1. I get a “Q” I get qr8.co.uk a design agency from Sheffield

  2. Are you moving back to Edinburgh? Lucky, lucky old you! I lived there for three years until I was forced to move to Oxford as an economic migrant. I go back to visit once a year – I only wish I could make it a one-way trip. Good luck with the house-hunting, anyway!

  3. I also get a ‘Q’… qthemusic.com – essential album tracks, downloads and audio/video streams.

  4. One I wasn’t aware of, Nik. Cheers. You know, there’s something about the language on that site that bugs me. It’s how there’s so much “you”—”we can help you.” It’s like a blanket covering of the entire population, as if we’re all potential clients. I think designers should be more choosy about their clients. Don’t you think?

I do like the larger than normal type size, though. You don’t often get design websites with text that’s so easy on the eyes.

Kate, I am indeed. Heading back across in January, and am in the process of securing a nice flat my fiancee and I viewed on Monday. Got a great taster of the city again during our two-night stay. The Christmas market is always good. Isn’t Oxford similar, though? I’ve not had the pleasure, yet.

  5. One of my favoured music magazines, Simon. At least back when I bought them.

  6. Congratulations on the flat! And you’re right, Christmas in Edinburgh is amazing. The markets are even more fun than the Viennese ones, I think – that gorgeous setting beneath the castle. Did you have a go on the ice rink? I always wanted to, but most of my Edinburgh mates are blokes, and they all steadfastly refused to compromise their masculinity by donning ice skates. :(

Oxford city centre is beautiful, but there its similarity to Edinburgh ends, unfortunately for me. It was a great place to be a student, but not a good place to live. I’ll spare you my anti-Oxford rant – suffice it to say that my two-year exit plan commences in January!

  7. I guess both of our lists explain why we chat about football often! http://www.brianyerkes.com/url-abc-meme/

  8. Such a great setting, Kate. No doubt. I didn’t make it on the rink this time. It’s not that I’m too manly—I used to ice skate every week as a young teenager—just that we didn’t have much time to spare before taking our passports to a property agent. That’s a shame you’re not settled in Oxford, but here’s hoping you can make it back to Edinburgh, or to somewhere you’re equally happy.

Brian, coming over for a look now.

  9. Your letter “A” took me on a whole other inspired path… now If I can just make it through the rest of the letters.

Thank you for what you do.

  10. Hey David … you popped up on my list! must be because you have a great blog and I can’t wait for logo design love!

    My list: http://www.conceptiondesign.ca/blog/?p=234

  11. Ace Jet 170 is an excellent blog, Robyn. Glad you found it enjoyable, too.

Richelle, I just dropped by to comment. Thanks for sharing your post.

  12. Nice meme (I am not a fan of them in general) :)

  13. Hi David, I’m not really a fan of the new QR8 site… their old website was much better, they seem to have abandoned quite alot of the style that made me bookmark them in the first place.

    Take care

  14. I had quite a few Qs. I expected jQuery.com to show up, since I’m a web developer, and reference that website quite often. The actual first hit was SunsetMarquis.com — A famous hotel in West Hollywood. I was interning with the design company that recently redesigned their entire brand- logo, website and on-site signage.

  15. You too, Nik.

    Rarst, heading over now.

Anna, how did the internship go? All good I hope. I interned with a company just outside Pittsburgh, way back in 2001. Great experience, great people.

  16. Q

    Qantas.com.au

    Makes sense being an Aussie

  17. Hay David, interesting post concept—and thanks for the “K”!

  18. A good airline, too, Mat, from what I remember.

    Any time, Andrew. No worries.

  19. My “q” comes up with http://questionablecontent.net/
I great little webcomic.. check it out if you have time :)

  20. Ouch.. I am not sure I am happy about this idea.. I checked 1/2 of the alphabet and decided that I really needed to get back to work.. Many of my guilty (guilty now anyway) web pleasures were listed… including this site were here.. although at least the Q ended up being work related..

it was for a Quality Free Vector Graphics site.. I presume I needed an icon or something :D

  21. OH jeez. You think you had a theme with foot ball? The Pirate Bay came up first for me for the letters B, D, J, K, M, R, S, and W.
