Typography resources

A few typography resources, tips, tutorials, advice.

, on this site, inspired by a conversation on .

Design Observer

Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Typeface by Michael Beirut. Michael writes regularly on Design Observer. This is another of his typographical insights.

Information Architects

, at Information Architects. An interesting read, with some top resources.

Thinking with Type

from Thinking with Type. Tens of thousands of digital typefaces are available. Most of them are junk. Here are a few nicely chosen ones from a great typography resource.

A List Apart

by Peter K Sheerin at A List Apart. Hypens are not dashes… hyphens are not dashes…

Type Culture

from TypeCulture. A compilation of downloadable PDF articles and essays, with snippets for a quick overview.

Typotheque

from Typotheque. A focused article, obviously, but a revealing look at Gill Sans with some interesting alternatives.

Vitaly Friedman

pieced together by Vitaly Friedman. With so many crap freebies available, it’s nice to see a collection of carefully chosen options.

Any others you know of?

  1. Thanks for that, some useful fonts and nice not to have to search through hundreds of poor fonts to get to them.

Maybe one day I will get round to making one…

  2. Thank you, bookmarked!!

  3. Excellent list, David. I sometimes set up my Stumble settings to find such sites but I don’t have the time to create a comprehensible list… That’s really a pity, because they could really use as reference for many web users.

By the way, that gives me an idea: how long do you think it will take to create a Web encyclopaedia where to list only such resources and no crap? I think there is a real need for it. There is way too much useless content on the Web and that makes it really difficult to find genuine resources.

  4. A good list to get stuck into, this is definitely something I need to start considering for future websites.

  5. Mig, StumbleUpon’s great, although I’ve not been using it much these days. I’m not sure how long it’d take to create an encyclopaedia, a few grey hairs by then.

  6. Some well-chosen resources, David. An excellent round-up. Thank you.

    David,
LifeClever posted a pretty good list of resources yesterday that you might like:

  8. You’re very welcome, John.

Asgeir, thanks for the link. I’ll check it out.

  9. Great collection, David. iA and A List Apart are sites I’ve recently begun subscribing to and have found them to be great design resources in general.

I haven’t ever really looked too far into typography beyond my own intuition, but have come across these resources/articles recently:

80 Beutiful Typefaces For Professional Design
    Great Fonts for Web 2.0

  10. Interesting, the article on Gill Sans, I have always hated that font, save for the light faces. It’s just not proportionate for my tastes. I always thought I was just being a snob, but that article brings to light (though promoting another font) the parts of the font i find particularly horrible.
