The past seven days

What’s been happening with me in the past seven days.

Book tweaks
I’m currently tying up the final details of my design book, working closely with my copy editor to iron out any kinks. It’s looking much better than I hoped, and although the last-minute addition of an extra chapter created more work, that’s good news for anyone wanting to buy a copy. The cover design has been passed to the publisher for feedback. Once ready I’ll share it here (my internal design was settled at the start of the project).

Teaching in Mexico
Out of the blue, I was offered a position teaching corporate identity at Cedim University in Mexico, during the January to May 2010 semester. Some nights were spent laying awake longer than normal, thinking over a possible move, but I eventually declined in order to focus on other things. A big thanks to Miguel Fuentes for his time, and to those of you who offered advice.

Judging the Chip Shop Awards
For new subscribers, I’ve previously featured the Chip Shop Awards on my blog. Event manager Katy Thomson gave me a nice surprise with an invitation to judge the 2010 awards in London. Entry is open.

Wedding plans
Some of you will know already that in June next year I’m tying the knot in Cyprus. It’ll be a small ceremony in a beach-front gazebo. Family and close friends. One to look forward to alright.

Synecdoche, New York
I took a little time-out to watch Charlie Kaufman’s Synecdoche, New York (2008). Philip Seymour Hoffman doing what he does best, in a strange and incredibly detailed film. 7/10. On a similar note, I give The Men Who Stare at Goats a disappointing 4/10. Expected more from a top cast.

Christmas
Every year I say the same, “I won’t leave it until the last minute.” It rarely works that way, but with just six weeks to go I’m doing well to get a few online purchases made. I can’t stand shopping in sardine can stores.

Fielding email
If you’ve sent an email and I haven’t replied, please bear with me. It’s head down for the next two weeks.

What’s next?
Once my book’s wrapped up I’ll be working with clients again. I didn’t think I’d be looking forward to it as much as I am, so the time has just about arrived when I stop directing potential work to other designers.

That’s pretty much it. I hope things are going great for you.

  1. Tieing the know in Cyprus eh?
I’ve been, oh gosh, over 10 times, but my brother got married there 2 years ago and it was a beautiful day, lots of great photos of them on the beach!
So I have no doubts yours will go down a treat ;-)
You’ll have to put up some photies :-D

  2. Hi Caroline. I remember it from my early teens when I went for a family holiday (it was actually the last family trip I’ve been on, so bit of a coincidence we’re heading back there). I’ll be sure to share a few photos, no worries.

  3. Seems to be an Irish thing to get married in Cyprus, a few friends of mine have done the same thing!

  4. Congratulations on everything – you’re busy, doing interesting things, getting great offers and oh, what was that other thing? Marriage, that’s right. I’ve been married eight years and just had a baby. Life is good. I wish you all the best!

  5. Oh man, you’ve been busy… but you can do everything, wish you luck. I can’t wait to get my copy of your book…

  6. Bummer that The Men Who Stare At Goats was disappointing. The trailer made it look pretty awesome and maybe I also gave it extra points because the trailer included “More Than A Feeling” by Boston as background music.

  7. About the Mexico offer, good decision! Especially if you’re getting married shortly after, that’s probably stressful enough. I look forward to your book as well as new work from you!

  8. You forgot to add that you will be getting to work on the 2nd edition of the book.

  9. It wasn’t the first choice, Ian, and we looked at a lot of different place abroad. But we’re both more than happy. I reckon Cyprus is so popular because of how straightforward the marriage process is.

Congratulations on your new family addition, Mari!

Catrina, the trailer does look good, but for me, the film just never got going.

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, Jon. ;)

    Thanks very much Victor, Kiren.

  10. Organising a wedding when you’re a long distance from the venue can be tricky, so choosing a place where the process is fairly straight-forward is a wise idea. All the best for the preparations and the day. I can boast that I got married in Tasmania, which is a truly beautiful destination (though proximity wasn’t a problem for us, of course) :)

I hear what you’re saying about online shopping and Christmas sneaking up. This year it looks like Christmas shopping will be brought to my family courtesy of the letters E, T, S and Y.

  11. Is that clock from Prague? Just been there, awesome city :)

  12. Congratulations, David, on all your recent successes! Life is surely treating you well. :)

Sad to hear that The Men Who Stare at Goats wasn’t so great; I’ve been looking forward to seeing it…

  13. The hotel we’ve been dealing with for the wedding has been superb, Tracey. We had to change the actual wedding date after discovering a mix-up with flights, which caused some worry, but both the hotel and the Cypriot registry office have been very helpful. The only other thing needing booked was a photographer. That’s sorted, too. I’d like to visit Tasmania one day. Have you lived there all your life?

Acai, it is indeed. The photo isn’t mine, but I spent a few days there two years back, and completely agree—awesome.

Look at it this way, Robyn, you can’t be let down too much when you see the film. And although I love the film industry, I’m by no means an expert. You might think it’s great. Thanks a lot for the congrats!

  14. Can’t believe you passed up Mexico. I’ve been there twice. Its inspirational.

  15. Busy, busy, busy eh?……..
    1. Waiting eagerly for the book to be released. Cant wait to get my copy.

    2. I wish you could have taken it up. I understand you have time constraints……but if ever there is an offer from Dubai, please dont refuse, look forward to your insights on design.

    3. I am sure you will have a great wedding in Cyprus……post lots of pics.

All the very best for all your ventures personal and professional.

  16. David, go with gift cards as gifts. They’re a godsend…

  17. I’ve been living in Tasmania for the past few years; I grew up in a different part of Australia and have moved around a bit but Tassie is home now. I’d like to visit Ireland one day – I’ve spent quite a bit of time in the UK in the past, so I can’t believe I haven’t made it across the water to your side yet!

  18. Congratulations on everything.

  19. Wow, you have had your hands full lately. I’m glad to hear that everything as busy as it is seems to be going well.

  20. Have to say, I find the actuality of what the movie MWSAG is roughly based on [ie: the goverment's study into using various cognitive methods as weapons/tools] far more interesting [though, ultimetly disheartening] than the movie.

However Synecdoche, New York I thought was great [a bit sad, though usually the best movies are] however I have to admit to being a HUGE mark for Phillip Seymore Hoffman, as well as greatly enjoying almost anything Kaufman has touched. If you haven’t seen it, may I recommend the movie ‘Before the Devil Knows Your Dead’?

Congrats on the book being finished up, I think I will def. try to pick up a copy when I can; even bigger congratulations on the upcoming wedding, may it and the years that follow be all you dream of.

  21. Congratulations David. You are one of my biggest idols in design. But one day the student will surpass his master.. :> One day ;)
    Congratulations of getting married soon!

  22. I’d love to visit Mexico for more of a tourist stay, Joe. The teaching post was 25 hours student contact per week, and from experience, that means an additional 25 hours minimum preparing the lessons.

Tracey, very glad you’ve found somewhere you call home. I’ve had itchy feet for the past six months or so. Your comment has proved quite popular, by the way. I’ve since had four or five spammers copy and paste it (only adding a few words of their own at the end) in an attempt to get a link to their site. Seems to be a regular tactic of late.

Kamila, Namrita, Calandra, thanks very much.

I’m not sure what you mean with the gift cards, Robert. Wedding gifts?

The best movies are often the most sad, Brian. I agree with that. Cheers for the recommendation. That’s one I’ve not yet seen.
