Logo of the month #2

Hartford Whalers logo

The Hartford Whalers ice hockey team became no more back in 1997. Their logo still represents a simple idea, effectively executed.

A green W with a blue whale’s tale on top of it. When placed together the negative space forms the letter H symbolic for Hartford.

Simple, scalable, and works just as well without colour.

Hockey trivia:

First NHL Game: October 11, 1979
Final Game: April 13, 1997
Moved to Carolina in 1997

  3. [...] Oh, and you might have noticed that there has already been a logo of the month for January. Rules are great and all, but why not bend them for some nice design. [...]

  4. Well Yeah, everybody knows the whale-tail logo rules. I like the 1979 version better though…

  5. random!!

  6. Eugene,

I’m not familiar with the 79 version. Do you have a link?

    Dave,

Glad to offer the logo you were looking for, and even better that your search brought you here! ;)

  7. I’ve been a hockey fan since I was a young boy and I’ve always found that many of the team logos were really well thought out. In addition to the Whalers, another really good one is the Minnesota Wild logo.

In addition to the wildlife background, the entire logo is made up of a bear’s head. Takes a little bit to gather everything but it’s really well put together.

  8. Hi Mike,

Thanks for showing that Minnesota logo. I’m not very familiar with all the hockey team logos, but they certainly have a similar style.

  9. Love the old Hartford Whaler logo. Another one that has the same hidden initials is the old Milwaukee Brewers “ball in glove” logo. It’s almost as if the same guy designed both logos.
