How to use cutouts in advertising

Here are two clever print ads for the suicide prevention centre, CVV. The strapline reads, “Help yourself”.
Mer-chan sees these ideas as inspired by the excellent art of Peter Callesen.

Quite similar in idea to this falling cutout ad for Blood Donation.
Okay, so the first passer-by might rip the hanging figure off the page, but I think it’s a nice idea nonetheless.
According to adNerd, the idea is from Leo Burnett in Sao Paulo, but I’m not 100% on that. If anyone knows for sure please do tell.

I love simple ideas like this. I guess people may rip off the figure at the bottom, although I’m sure the adverts are cheap to produce.

I really like the ads a lot and, tbh, I think they work a lot better for suicide prevention than for blood donation.
And I think to say they were “inspired by…” is being polite!
Great ads, such a simple idea (always the best) but really effective. I have to agree with Ahsan they are VERY similar to the blood donation ads.
Very nice ads, I do have to agree, it does seem more suited to the suicide ads than the blood donation.
Nice! The shadow makes the imagery even more effective.
I think it would work best up high on a billboard…it’d look more dramatic and wouldn’t get vandalised
That is a cool and very simple idea! I like it .. it’s one of those, “Now why didn’t I think of that?” things! I agree with Andy that it might make for an interesting billboard. An ad that clever would look better in large scale.
If these were shown at billboard size I’d definitely stop in my tracks.
Thanks for all your comments.
Neat!! I love creative things like this where the designer has done more than just print something on a piece of paper. I admire people who can think like that. What I like about the blood donor ad is the contrast between the red and white that you don’t get with the suicide one (though the overall idea is better suited for suicide prevention). Maybe if the suicide one was printed black on the front and had the white cutout that would be better. And another vote for the billboard idea here!
Have you seen the video ad from Banc de Sang, yet? Cameron Moll mentioned it on his blog a couple days ago.
Very clever and effective.
Brilliant. Have never seen these before. Brilliantly executed, and love those distressed backgrounds. Great find, David–truly inspiring.
Quite inspiring, David! Thanks for sharing!
I hadn’t seen that ad. It’s an interesting one, very targetted, but almost had me clicking through to see what was going on. I would’ve done if I’m not so busy. What’s the idea behind it?
Beth Ellen,
Thanks for dropping in.
John,
The distressed background are nice aren’t they? I think they really add to the photographs.
Daisey,
Good to have to you visit. Cheers.
Now that is cool, pity these simple and highly effective ideas are rarely used and seen these days.
wow, thats really cool, but unfortunately very very similar to the blood donation ads. Its great that it just takes someone to literally think outside of the square, but is a bit stink to the first group who had the initiative to go and put their idea out there. Definately a vote for the billboard idea!!! that would look great if the people were lifesize and had a bit more detail to them - surely a crowd stopper!
And David, kudos on such a brill site - full of stimulating ideas and other thought provoking content, i stumbled upon it in my searches for some research for my final year project at uni.
I’m glad you found my site and left a comment. Best of luck with your final year project!
