David Airey in the top 10 websites for designers, and a new look for HOW Design

HOW top 10 websites for designers

Last week I received a very welcomed email from Megan, Senior Editor at HOW Magazine, telling me that my website is amongst the HOW top 10 websites for designers in February. Quite the honour, and alongside some excellent company.

Here’s the list in full, with a short description provided by HOW:

A new look for HOW Design

HOW Design website

HOW Design have also launched a new website design, and I certainly think it’s an improvement. I was too late to grab a screenshot of the previous version, but I remember hearing of a tool that lets you find old site pages, even if they’re no longer online. Does anyone know of it?

Whilst the new design is a step up, I still think that Google AdSense makes you look unprofessional. The content is more clearly organised, therefore easier to navigate, but less advertising would create a better user experience. If the ads must remain, they could be better aligned. At present it seems like some of them are floating in space.

The HOW Blog is also worth stopping by for some design news.

What do you think of the new HOW website design?

  1. Wow. This is amazing! I knew that you are to be highlighted very soon. Earn this with a great honour!

  2. David, Congrats on the recognition.
What you are looking for is the Way Back When Machine - http://www.archive.org/index.php.

Its great for comparing revamped websites, I used it myself a few months ago when I was looking at apple’s online store.

The tool for the old webpages is the Internet Archive Wayback Machine:

For some reason it is not working for me at the moment though…

  4. Good work David!

  5. Rafie, Rich,

    Thanks very much guys.

    Brian, Mike,

That’s exactly the tool I was thinking of. Cheers for letting me know, even though it seems to be experiencing some issues at present. I’ll try again later, and hopefully be able to update this post with an old HOW Design screenshot.

  7. Congrats! That is fantastic news. I’m a huge HOW fan. I saw their redesign yesterday and have to agree with you on the ads. It is an improvement from their previous design, but still far from where I feel it could be. I was rather underwhelmed by it.

  10. David,

Congrats, and well done! I am sure a lot of time and hard work goes into your site, and now your new logo design love site, so fair play mate.

  11. Congratulations, David. I also read about you on one of my favourite sites, UnBeige.

The old HOW web site design was an abomination; I’m no fan of the new site either, and agree with you re the Google Adsense and the alignment of the ads–looks like they’ve been thrown at the design from quite a distance. Hate the placement of that ‘Get a Free Issue of How’ banner too. Fortunately they have some good content–it’s their saving grace.

  14. Hi David,
Congrats :) I was on this last month and it sent me about 1000 unique visitors over the month so embrace :) Another way to see old websites is to use google cache. I like their new redesign as well. The old one was pretty tame.

I love such lists, they allow us to discover many wonderful sites.
This one led me to a wonderful blog by Vancouver illustrator Bambi Edlund - it’s amazing to see his illustrations of the streets I walk by every day.

oh, and David, perhaps you can suggest HOW magazine’s editor to hire you to re-design their site with further improvements.

  21. Congratulations on your achievements, I just started reading your blog about a week ago and became instantly hooked. Some of my favorite articles of yours are like this one. It is nice seeing a compilation of the top X blogs in design. I rarely get around to the design blogs and you do a great job finding the best.

  22. Congratulations David, must be good to know your ideas are appreciated in this way. Enjoying Randy Ludacer’s packaging blog now too!

  23. Hi David,
Not sure congrats are in order, I looked at three of the other sites and wasn’t impressed….not sure showing a shiny cup logo on your website is an award or not….I like your site, an unselfish resource…so I thought these other sites merited at least a browse (the boast from HOW is that these are the top 10 websites for designers!!!….no they are not….I checked out the Connelley partners website….just too slow bye bye, the packaging website?? some persons subjective account of packaging with a title that ends with the word “stuff” and the David & Akachi Media site, looked at their portfolio, look at their one and only logo..really have a look!!….a custom fire shape from photoshop?? what they didn’t even disguise it…sorry David if you are serious about design which i believe you are decline the allure of that shiny new cup it has no merit or integrity, absolutley none.
Hope you understand that if any of us are to take our lives seriously then we have to fight these little fights.

  24. Well deserved! Congrats!

  25. Tom,

That’s great you enjoy my articles here. Thanks for letting me know.

    Steve, Dave,

    Thanks for your comments.

    bartholo,

Of course you’re fully entitled to your own opinion, and whilst some of the other sites on this list aren’t your cup of tea, I’m glad that you do like mine. I felt that HOW at least deserved a mention because of the excellent forum they run. Have you used it before? I’ve certainly received some hard but fair constructive criticism from other designers there.

  26. Congrats on making their list! It is well deserved!

  27. YES!!! I submitted your site and John’s!! I’m so glad they chose you guys! Wow, they even copied what I wrote about why you two should be on the list! Ha! Have you received a lot of traffic from them?

    Lauren,

That’s great of you to suggest John and I! Thanks very much! You were also very kind in your words of description. I’ve not received too much traffic (not noticeable anyhow), but then I’ve not had much time of late to check on my stats. If I find out just how many visits I received I’ll let you know.

    Again, thank you. ;)

  29. You’re so welcome, David! Like I told John, you both totally deserve it with all the hard work you put into your sites. So thank you for sharing with us!

    Thanks very much guys.

  33. David,

Thanks for the graphic and mention regarding the HOW top 10 sites. I built the Connelly Partners site and I’m making a point to go around and visit all the others on the top 10. Your site looks like a great read, so I’m a new subscriber. Looking forward to seeing more.

To Bartholo, … Yep, I know it’s slow to load if you’re not on broadband, but you might go back and check it out sometime. At least we made the loading interesting with some of our broadcast work to watch while you wait. I am an avid HOW reader and was excited that they chose the site to kick off the new redesign. Can’t say I love all the sites they list, but we think ours deserves to be in there, slow load or not!
