Here’s some audio cassette tape nostalgia

Cassette tape

Remember those weekend walks to the music store? Mix-tapes were all the rage and you wanted a tape-to-tape recording. There were a lot of different blank cassette tapes to choose from. Seems like ages ago, doesn’t it?

I came across a site today called tapedeck.org, for analog audio tape cassette nostalgia. It took me back a few years so I thought I’d post it here.

Tapedeck.org is a project of neckcns.com, built to showcase the amazing beauty and (sometimes) weirdness found in the designs of the common audio tape cassette. There’s an amazing range of designs, starting from the early 60’s functional cassette designs, moving through the colourful playfulness of the 70’s audio tapes to amazing shape variations during the 80’s and 90’s.

Thanks to reaction [beta] for flagging that one.

I know what you’re thinking. Technology has moved on and the cassette tape is truly obsolete. But is it really?

The people at ‘No Name No Slogan’ have conducted an ‘in-depth’ study, testing the audio cassette against the iPod. The results are quite interesting.

  1. Old school!

  2. Hey, what happened to your blog design?

  3. There are some bigger changes afoot, ilker.

I’ll be mentioning it soon, and I think it’ll involve a move out of the ‘blog’ directory.

  4. Moving out? what do you mean.. are you quitting your blog?

  5. I’m not quitting the blog, no. I enjoy the interaction too much.

I mean using davidairey.com as opposed to davidairey.com/blog, but obviously that’ll be a slight set-back.

  6. That was fun. I still have a double cassette deck that I use.

  7. Good stuff. I remember I had a huge collection of tapes. I found Maxell the best.

  8. Hey that’s a cool site

The internet is good for so many weird and wonderful things

  9. Excellent.

I still remember the amazement and wonder at the first clear cassettes.

“Wow! you can see the insides and everything!”

  10. This entry caught my eye right away when I saw the cassette. I remember making mix tapes on my little fisher stereo ! I also remember a friend that tried to hook up christmas lights to it. Ummmm, not so good. Think SMOKE !

For years and years I have dreamed of having enough energy to try to catalog the contents of my 100+ casette tapes. I still haven’t motivated myself. But I just can’t let them go! :)

  11. Hello Dawn,

Thanks for commenting, and drawing my attention back to this old blog post. A little cassette tape nostalgia is always good. :)
