I can appreciate how focusing on smaller, independent artists is much more difficult, and so it might not be the best way to go when studying colour theory.

If I was approaching something similar, I'd aim for the larger artists, with more than 10 albums released. That way, you can compare and contrast how their album covers have changed as they've become more popular.

My $0.02 for what it's worth.

I haven't decided on a set research topic yet, just general. However, I started my thinking with how important is design when you think of the image of the artist and profits. After talking with my teacher she suggested exploring color theory and its effects on album artwork in particular. I personally am more interested in smaller, independent artists, but I think that would be difficult to research.
I've been trying to research the whole general topic a little to see what information is out there, and then narrow down my topic, but I'm having trouble finding anything so far. So basically if you have any ideas on what related topics would have information available, or more importantly, know of any resources I can look into, it would be so helpful. Thanks!

Hi Brittany,

What in particular do you want to learn? Graphic communications plays a huge part in the music industry.

I am currently enrolled in a graphic communications class and I am trying to do some research on the impact of graphic communications in the music industry (album covers, merchandise, websites, flyers, etc.) Somehow I came across your website and found a couple of your comments on graphics in the music industry. I was wondering if you know of any good sources for this topic since it seems to be an interest of yours.

You're right about being fortunate with the web, Ed. Listening to music has never been more accessible.

A very nice idea for an improvement to this print job. It'd certainly help in my opinion.

It has 70's feel to me. I like the use of colour, but I can't say that it would intrigue me to try it. As a teenager I would buy albums based on cover art and the instruments played. We only had 2 radio stations that only played top 40, so anything outside of that box was a risk. Kids today are very fortunate with the web.

I think I might have reacted better (sales wise) if there was some 3D layering effect. I would have suggested printing it on transparent plastic, eliminate the black as the window to what is beneath. Make the title black.
