FAB Creative Excellence Awards

There are just two days left to enter 2009′s FAB Awards (Food and Beverage Creative Excellence Awards). Now in its 11th year, the FAB Awards has taken entries from clients and agencies in over 60 countries around the world. Here are some of my favourites from 2008.

I sway between loving and hating advertising.. but the Heinz and Extra ads make it hard to hate it. Not the most original ideas (I’m sure I’ve seen similar ads to both before) so well executed.
The honey packaging is also great — still love it after seeing it around the net a while back..

Sometimes you can’t help but hate advertising but when you see stuff like this you fall in love with it.

I’m a designer but I’m not an advertising hater! I love advertising for its concepts and often think it’s an area in which I’d like to work. I think some of the strongest conceptual ideas often come in the form of advertising. The Guinness ad is so simple but it’s genius!
Love the contrast of clean type and sketchy illustrations on ‘this water’. I think the Coca Cola redesign works great, not so sure if Pepsis attempts to do the same last year were as successful – http://www.thedieline.com/blog/2008/10/what-is-pepsi-t.html
Going on a bit of a tangent here but I guess like a logo redesign, a packaging redesign project is very interesting to look at. Especially if the new design is viewed as a step down, Tropicana comes to mind. I wonder David, do you approach redesigns in a different way to approaching a fresh design? As a whole, are the processes for each quite similar?

Thanks David. My favourite ads, logos, visuals are the one’s that always contain a bit of a “aha”. It’s a reward to those who actually take the moment to look at the design. (My favs here are Guinness and Pepsi Bike rack ads). BUT – as someone who has looked at more junior portfolios than I care to remember – advertising and communication is more than a clever visual and logo. That’s not advertising. As I write on my blog, communicating a message that resonates to the audience and gets them to do something is much harder than a nicely photoshopped picture with a logo.
Coke FTW (you can bet Pepsi’s new logo won’t be getting any awards).

Oh My God..
Guinness by BBDO New York, City. First i didn’t get it but after few seconds then i realized its like a glass of whiskey dark heavy at the bottom and light white gas on top with all those bubbles inside it in form of city light. Truly amazing.
Pepsi’s new logo is so bad. I think the comments on the article that Gráinne linked to say it all.
I think the Guinness ad is superb. It would have been cool if they had burned the sides a little to make it more like a 3D class, because don’t they normally pour it in a long, slender glass with a wide top? I love that honey logo as well.
Some great examples there, particularly Lactofree and Guinness, so simple and effective, great stuff.

I’m going to add my nod for the Guiness entry – both clever and beautifully done. I also like the simplicity and subtlety of the Extra entry. I agree with John Lepp’s comment (above) – it’s most important in advertising to communicate a strong message which resonates immediately with the target audience.
Thank God – thanks Tracey… I was starting to think that the only thing in advertising that mattered was a clever visual.
I love the lactofree one – I actually sat up and stared at it when I first saw it on TV (normally I change channels as soon as ads come on). I think the concept is wonderful. I love the simplicity of it.
The chewing gum one I needed to work out (but actually I think that is better because it engages your mind – which means you remember it better) I think it is really clever, but again the simplicity is really refreshing.

I love the Heinz ad with the sliced tomato. And the Coca-Cola can is just strikingly perfect. I really hope they never change that logo (ahem … Pepsi?).
I am the only one not getting the first ad? I didn’t see it before and I don’t get what exactly is the trick about it. Suggesting the lack of real milk by having it all spilled on the floor? Suggesting the cow’s black and white “fur” (I think I see an udder too..)? I don’t see where’s the wow in it. Maybe there’s no wow at all :)
I’m loving Kneady’s Sweet Bread, Heinz, Extra, Guiness and Waitrose Honey. I least like the Pepsi ad and I don’t see any innovation in Coca Cola’s very well known and probably awarded packaging..

The first ad shows a cow’s head. See it’s eye towards the top-left? It’s one of my favourites from the selection (along with Heinz).
