Edinburgh chimneys

Edinburgh chimneys

Shot from my third-floor studio window as I get to grips with the Nikon D5000. There’s been no Photoshop work done on the sky (just a little darkening of the chimneys).

A beautiful Edinburgh dusk that my amateur photo doesn’t do justice.

Thanks a lot for your DSLR recommendations, by the way. More Edinburgh photos to follow.

  1. Great shot David. I’m glad you’re happy with the Nikon. Looking forward to seeing more pics!

P.S. gotta love the low noise level of the new cameras these days.

  2. I’ve never seen your photography before, David. Nice shot. Would be good to see more. Nice site and logo redesign by the way!

  3. Wow, beautiful shot David, is it dawn or dusk?

  4. Sorry, I just realized it is dusk :)

  5. Thanks for helping out with camera advice, Jin. I was close to paying more on the D90, but for my amateur needs, I’m more than happy with the D5000.

You can see bugger all out the same window today. So misty.

Hi Rob, happy you approve of the logo and site redesign. It was a long time coming in my mind. Cheers buddy.

Carlos, I’m glad you caught that — there’s not too much to read. How are you enjoying Adelaide? All good I hope.

  6. Hey David, beautiful photo. I’ve been waiting to see photos since your blog post asking readers about camera recommendations. Do you think you will do a review on the camera sometime?

Every other day I wish I had a nice camera. Instead I just waste countless hours on stock photo websites and bending my concepts to what I can find =(

Looking forward to seeing more stuff.

  7. David, I just returned home on Monday, I spent some good times in the beautiful Adelaide, definitely I’ll return there soon.

Thanks for mention that, you reminded me that I have to update my website. :)

  8. Hi Andy, yep, I’ll probably write a little more about the actual camera once I figure out how everything works. So many settings, so don’t hold your breath.

Great piece of kit, though. Seems ideal for my level.

  9. Nice shot David. So much of good photography is just recognizing a good scene and eliminating distracting elements of the scene. A “good eye” as they say-evident here.
Nice touch to add what you did in Photoshop.

  10. Amazing shot. wish I had such a view from my window.. but there’s only a big tree blocking everything!

I’ll have to save up and go see that view in person!

  11. Gorgeous photo, David! Please post more of your photography. :)

  12. Ah, now I’m homesick! I’m Scottish, and I used to live in Edinburgh. English skies just aren’t the same. I don’t want to be an economic migrant any more!

  13. Hello David,

Great shot. Thanks for sharing it with us. You have a good eye. I’m only an amteur with my Sony a200. It’s amazing.

Can I be cheeky and ask what settings you used?

    Best wishes
    Graeme

  14. I love your photo! It TOTALLY reminds me of the scene in Mary Poppins when all the chimney sweeps are playing on the roofs. So lovely.

  15. Nice shot. Make sure you check out Adobe TV. You’ll learn some fun stuff with Camera RAW over there.

  16. As a Nikon user myself, I’m curious to know what made you decide to go with Nikon. I use Nikon because too many people use Canon and I like being different and an underdog.

  17. I love photos like this – wonderful colours.

  18. Hello Graeme, that’s not cheeky at all, but the pre-set mode I used — “dawn/dusk” — probably isn’t the info you were hoping for. This option preserves the weak natural light before dawn or after sunset. Use of a tripod was definitely needed to prevent any blur.

Andrew, I choose the D5000 on the recommendations of others. I think I was always going to go either Canon or Nikon.

Jon, I’ll be sure to have a look, thanks for the tip.

Katie, funny that — you’re not the only one to be reminded of Mary Poppins. Glad you like it.

    Thanks a lot folks.

  19. David, what are you using for photo management? Am tossing up between Aperture and Lightroom, have read reviews and now bloody confused :) Thoughts?

  20. Hi Andrew, I haven’t gotten that far, yet, and simply use Photoshop for image editing. The little I’ve read on both Aperture and Lightroom as a comparison doesn’t really give one the nod over the other, but as I’m so used to Adobe products, that’d probably be my preference.

  21. Hi David,
I spent a summer last year living and working in Edinburgh, what a beautiful city! I’m back home in Aus now, but seeing this photo makes me want to return.

    Love the photo.

  22. Your pic looks amazing, Edinburgh is a great city i went to watch the football derby between Hibs and Hearts the other week and i had great time, awesome city.
