Newspaper sales on the up

My parents bought two copies of the County Down Spectator.

I’m not surprised, given the journalistic excellence that abounds (click image for larger view).

  1. Congratulations David! I’ll have to take a visit to B&N soon to check out your book.

  2. Ha! ok ok I’ll get the book. ;) I was gonna pick it up anyway, logos are so fun.

  3. Thanks very much, Robyn, Oscar.

The paper’s in Northern Ireland, and my dad dropped a copy of my book into the local office. The next day I got a call from a journalist. I don’t get too many press mentions, so it’s always nice.

  4. mammy collecting the newspaper newspaper snippets! :)

Just goes to show, when one is printed rather than blogged about, print trumps.

    Good stuff David

  5. Heading out the door to pick up the book right now. I’m just getting started in the field and am really looking forward to this book!

  6. Congratulations David, it must be cool to see a picture of yourself printed in newspaper!

  7. LOL!

David, that’s great! Grats on the printed mention!

  8. How exciting! Great job!

  9. Well, like I said on Facebook, congrats!! It’s been so neat to see you grow your brand, influence and talent over the last few years. I still need to see if B&N or maybe Borders has your book on the shelves and send you a picture :)

  10. Thanks very much, everyone. I’m not sure why, Lauren, but the automated Facebook mention of this post disappeared. Very sorry if your comment went along with it. Borders is a strange one for me. Didn’t the firm go into administration? But it still operates?

  11. Oh weird (about the FB post). Doesn’t matter, same comment is here so it’s preserved ;)

There are so many companies going into bankruptcy in the US now (I think that’s what you mean when you say administration) that I can’t keep track. There are two kinds of bankruptcy, though, the kind where they go out of business and the kind where they “reorganize.” The latter means the company is still operating but it usually appoints new executives and has a lot of layoffs. That’s probably what Borders did (I was just in one on Monday, though I was really just waiting for a friend and I totally forgot to look at the graphic design books!).

  12. Thanks for the business lesson there, Lauren. ;) Maybe “administration” is a UK term (news about the Borders administration here, on a UK news site).

  13. I bought your book and I think it’s fantastic. I’m a final year design student (also based in lovely Edinburgh) and I own a lot of design books. This one is definitley one of my new favourites! It’s great to get the whole process from someone like yourself.

Plus I love the very strokeable embossed cover!

  14. David, Your dad probably did the best thing he could, by dropping the book in the newspaper office. Congrats! Loved the clip. Somehow, despite the e-everything, i just love to pick up a book/newspaper and read. That feeling is different from an online anything.. Congrats! You deserve all of this attention and then some more!!

  15. That’s great to know, Mandy, thank you, and I’m glad you like the cover, too. A few others who bought a copy said they’d prefer more weight in the cover, which I can understand. Great weekend here in Edinburgh, wasn’t it (weather-wise)? Was up Blackford Hill earlier taking some photos of the view.

Lakshmi, there’d be no newspaper piece had my dad not dropped a copy into the office. I’m fairly sure of that. And I agree about print, too. It’s the permanence that creates value in my eyes, rather than an online mention that can disappear in seconds. Thanks a lot for the congrats.

  16. Wasn’t it just? Edinburgh looks especially lovely when the sun finally does shine!

I really like the cover as is, it has a great tactility and I like when the feel of something is incorporated into the design. I thoroughly agree that the worth is indeed in the permanancy, I for one get pretty web weary…

  17. I have been meaning to get a copy of the new book. Congrats on the article.

    Dan

  18. Nice going David!
