It’s been a while since I’ve published any creative music videos, so I’ve embedded a new one which definitely stands out in the crowd. The track, Let The Dummer Kick, by Citizen Cope, contains exceptional animation by Artur Dimke. Artur makes great use of typography, emphasizing each individual word with an accompanying effect.

How do you advertise an event that features some of the world’s finest musicians? Simple. With a stunning piece of visual artistry.

This video sequence (embedded above) is stunning, and I love how it subtly highlights the names of each musician in time to the classical piano music. The musicians mentioned will be making an appearance at the Junge Wilde event in Germany this September, and the advert is the work of German ad agency Jung von Matt / Elbe.

It has been developed for a new print and online campaign, advertising the highly renowned Konzerthaus Dortmund (Philharmonie für Westfalen) where the Junge Wilde event is taking place.

Winding down for the weekend? Not just yet.

I’ve been incredibly busy these past few days and design deadlines are mounting. My posting frequency might leave a little to be desired for a while, but hopefully not.

I hope you all enjoy the calming music video from Air (above), have a fantastic weekend, and accept my apologies for not commenting on your own blogs for a while. It’s not for the want of trying.

I was recently directed to an online catalogue of poster designs (thanks Blair) and have picked out some of the ones I enjoy.

GigPosters.com is a site devoted to showcasing poster designs for the music industry. There’s a lot of underwhelming design in there (to be expected with the vast amount of posters on the site), but if you take a little time to browse you can find some gems.

You can search the site for either the band / DJ that the poster is designed for or by the designer who composed each layout.

I’m sure you can find better examples than the ones above. I simply searched for some of the bands / DJs I like and chose a poster design from their categories.

Remember those weekend walks to the music store? Mix-tapes were all the rage and you wanted a tape-to-tape recording. There were a lot of different blank cassette tapes to choose from. Seems like ages ago, doesn’t it?

I came across a site today called tapedeck.org, for analog audio tape cassette nostalgia. It took me back a few years so I thought I’d post it here.

Tapedeck.org is a project of neckcns.com, built to showcase the amazing beauty and (sometimes) weirdness found in the designs of the common audio tape cassette. There’s an amazing range of designs, starting from the early 60’s functional cassette designs, moving through the colourful playfulness of the 70’s audio tapes to amazing shape variations during the 80’s and 90’s.

I know what you’re thinking. Technology has moved on and the cassette tape is truly obsolete. But is it really?

The people at ‘No Name No Slogan’ have conducted an ‘in-depth’ study, testing the audio cassette against the iPod. The results are quite interesting.

If you’re like me you’ll enjoy listening to music when doing some design work. You’ll also enjoy finding out about new artists that match your music tastes. There’s a nice FREE online music player that lets you enter your favourite musicians or bands and it’ll create custom stations around their music genre.

For instance, in my screenshot above I added four different artists (shown in the little grey tabs on the left of the box). The player saves this info to my account so that anytime I visit the Pandora website it remembers my choices. The music player automatically generates similar styled tracks on an ongoing basis, and no need to login over and over as my info is stored on my computer.

It takes a while to tailor your stations to your exact tastes, and if you don’t like the choice of track Pandora comes up with then give it the ‘thumbs down’ and it will skip to the next track, while continuing to tailor your online station. It won’t be long before it offers up some excellent new additions to your music collection. It’s a pretty cool idea, and one I’ve been using for about a year now.

It’s currently only available to US residents, but if you give them any US postcode you’ll be able to register in no time at all (shhhh). You can read about Pandora in the press here.

Typography can be seen all around us, in almost every aspect of our lives. There’s a music video, called ‘The Child’ for French DJ Alex Gopher, which was created back in 1999 and it’s definitely worth a look if you haven’t seen it already. In fact, even if you have it’s still enjoyable.

The video is made entirely from typefaces and revolves around a pregnant woman being rushed to a New York City hospital in the back of a taxi.

Antoine Bardou-Jacquet is the man credited with the work. Here’s a short biography if you’re interested.
