Hewlett Packard set a design brief for the recent D&#038;AD Student Awards, and one result in particular stands out.]]></description>

<p>Hewlett Packard set a design brief for the recent <a href="http://studentawards.dandad.org/2009/categories/26/open-brief-2/03349/matt-robinson-tom-wrigglesworth" title="D&#038;AD Student Awards">D&#038;AD Student Awards</a>, and one result in particular stands out.</p>
<p><strong>Brief</strong>:<br />
Present an idea which promotes HP Workstations ability to bring to life anything the creative mind can conceive.</p>
<p><strong>Response</strong>:<br />
Focusing on the synchronisation of a range of HP products, printers become an orchestra in an aesthetic symphony conducted by HP Workstations.</p>

<p>Hitting out at today&#8217;s safe advertising, London ad-man <a href="http://cstadvertising.com/blog/" title="Dave Trott's blog">Dave Trott</a>, said:</p>

<p>French public health officials want to combat eating disorders by having magazines say to what extent their photos have been retouched.</p>

<p>The New York Times has featured a <a href="http://video.nytimes.com/video/2009/03/09/opinion/1194838469575/sex-lies-and-photoshop.html" title="New York Times">short video</a> (less than 5 minutes long) explaining why magazines should be more transparent (video produced by Jesse Epstein of <a href="http://jessedocs.blogspot.com/" title="wet dreams and false images">Wet Dreams and False Images</a>).</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve previously mentioned the topic, with<a href="http://www.davidairey.com/the-twisted-reality-of-fashion-advertising/" title="dove evolution campaign"> the twisted reality of fashion advertising</a>, and it&#8217;s one I believe should be given a lot more attention.</p>

<p><strong>Your thoughts</strong></p>
<p>Should magazines disclose to what extent their images have been retouched, or should we carry on as we are?</p>
<p>I don&#8217;t agree with those who blame the media for every teenage girl with an eating disorder, but there should at least be some accountability for fueling the fire.</p>
<p>Some people want to ban retouching entirely, but any form of media censorship isn&#8217;t good in my opinion. I&#8217;d like to see a high profile fashion magazine publish an issue without any retouching at all. Now there&#8217;s a publicity generator, and it would go some way to dissolving the myth of fairytale beauty.</p>

Created by <a href="http://www.amvbbdo.com/" title="AMV BBDO">AMV BBDO</a>, it drew a lot of comparisons to the more impressive <a href="http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=EEF0cg1j35o" title="view Honda's cog ad on YouTube" rel="nofollow">Honda &#8216;cog&#8217; ad</a>.</p>

<p>Guinness may be unsuitable for a vegetarian diet, as the production process involves the use of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isinglass" title="isinglass" rel="nofollow">isinglass</a>, made from fish. It is used as a fining agent for settling out suspended matter in the vat. The isinglass is retained in the floor of the vat but it is possible that minute quantities might be carried over into the beer.</p>

It's not very often that I see an advertising campaign I instantly appreciate. That's the power of imagery, and the power of targeting our environmental responsibilities.

<p>It&#8217;s not very often that I see an advertising campaign I instantly appreciate. That&#8217;s the power of imagery, and the power of targeting our environmental responsibilities.</p>
<p>This paper towel dispenser shows an ad campaign for the <a href="http://www.wwf.org.uk/core/index.asp" title="World Wildlife Federation">World Wildlife Federation</a> (WWF), and the strapline reads:</p>
<h3>save paper • save the planet</h3>
<p>The idea is that the more paper towels you take, the less green South America becomes. De-forestation in South America happens at an alarming rate, so anything that highlights the issue is good in my view.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m not quite sure why green foil is used behind the silhouette of South America. After all, the paper towels are already green (which I think is quite standard throughout Europe?). Perhaps its use is so that white paper towels have the same effect. Regardless, I like it a lot.</p>
<p>The agency responsible is <a href="http://www.saatchi.dk/" rel="tag" title="Saatchi &#038; Saatchi">Saatchi &#038; Saatchi</a>, Copenhagen Denmark.</p>

<p>Dove, a Unilever-owned brand, have launched quite the insightful viral video campaign, called Dove Onslaught, which aims to highlight how todays children are bombarded with false advertising messages on a constant basis.</p>

<p>The campaign video (above) does a great job at showing how the younger generation are being told what to look like, but when you consider that <a href="http://www.unilever.co.uk/ourbrands/personalcare/dove.asp?linkid=dropdown" title="Dove" rel="tag">Dove</a> are owned by Unilever, who also sell <a href="http://www.unilever.co.uk/ourbrands/foods/SlimFast.asp?linkid=dropdown" title="Slim Fast" rel="tag">Slim Fast</a>, is the organisation being hypocritical?</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve previously featured one of Dove&#8217;s viral advertising campaigns, Dove Evolution, in <a href="http://www.davidairey.com/the-twisted-reality-of-fashion-advertising/" title="dove evolution advertising campaign">the twisted reality of fashion advertising</a>. Worth a look if you like the Dove Onslaught example.</p>
<p>Perhaps these messages are simply marketing spin behind a multi-national company who is only looking out for itself?</p>
<p>Unilever’s subsidiary based in India, Hindustan Lever Limited (HLL), markets Fair &#038; Lovely Skin Cream and Lotion, the largest selling skin care product in India. Fair &#038; Lovely is being promoted as a &#8216;fairness face cream&#8217; that will lighten your dark skin. Through their advertisements, Hindustan Lever spreads the message that a light skin is better than a dark skin. Here&#8217;s a short ad, translated into English.</p>

<p>And equally interesting, is this ad for Fair &#038; Lovely, targetted at men.</p>

<p>When researching this blog post, I read some people call this kind of advertising racist, and that it promotes the idea that white skin is better, but can you counter that assumption with the proliferation of fake tanning products here in the UK, and how no-one bats an eyelid?</p>
<p>I think it all comes down to people wanting what they don&#8217;t have. If you want to be thin, drink Slim Fast, if you want to be white, use Fair &#038; Lovely Skin Cream, if you want to stand up against the fashion industry, whilst maintaining your beautiful skin, use Dove.</p>
<h3>Have your say</h3>
<p>Is this hypocrisy, or simply catering to the needs of the consumer? Would the consumer have these needs if it wasn&#8217;t for the advertiser?</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve featured the Dove Onslaught campaign, because I think <a href="http://www.ogilvy.com/" rel="nofollow tag" title="Ogilvy &#038; Mather">Ogilvy &#038; Mather</a> did a good job with it. I also wanted to show the flip-side of todays global marketing, and how one large corporation is in the business of making money, before doing what&#8217;s right for society.<br />
