Boost your Technorati favourites by 200% in 10 days

Improve your Technorati rank

One small step for web design. One giant leap for the number of Technorati members who favourited my blog.

If you don’t know what Technorati is then Kristie T has a short explanation on her home business blog.

10 days ago I posted an article about the Technorati ranking system. Your kind comments prompted me to add this little icon (below) to the top of my blog which is all I did to help to boost my Technorati profile:

Here’s how I was doing 10 days ago (below) and the image at the top (above) shows how I’m doing now (kind of an ‘after’ then ‘before’ display in true Irish fashion):

Technorati rank

Okay, let’s not get carried away. I did increase the number of people who added my blog as a favourite by 200% in 10 days. It was however just six people. That’s not to say I’m not grateful. In fact, I’d like to say thanks to the following for making me a favourite (clicking the names will show their Technorati profiles):

Wendy Piersall - doing great with her eMoms at Home blog (about blogging and business)

Andy Beard - with a raft of other blogs, most noteably AndyBeard.eu for all things niche marketing

Randa Clay - Randa’s top site is Randa Clay Design

Ian Hedges - Ian’s failure is the key to success could do with some tidying up (no offence Ian) ;)

Pop Stalin - Jen really knows her stuff regarding all things web development - nice Pop Stalin blog (journal) too

Katie Konrath - Katie authors the blog Does Your Major Matter? which aims to help students after they leave college

Dawud Miracle - Dawud offers up some excellent business advice with his Healthy Web Design site

Laura Spencer - an experienced freelance writer, Laura authors Writing Thoughts

Chris Lodge - Chris has a few blogs on the go, most noteably Blog-Op for all things blogging

So there you have it. How to increase the number of people adding you to their Technorati favourites by 200% in 10 days. Simple huh? If you have any success stories to share or tips on boosting your findability I’d love to know.

  1. Thanks for the mention David! Keep up the pace and you’ll have outdone BoingBoing in no time! ;)

  2. Ya kind of lost me…some of us are just simple hillbillys! So what you actually DID was post that little add this blog to my favorites…thats it?

  3. You’re very welcome Wendy.

Sorry Paul, I can see how I might not have explained it properly. Yep, all I did was add that icon in the upper right section of my blog’s homepage, making it easier for other bloggers to increase my page rank. Nothing more to it than that.

  4. Cheers David, that’s a lot of links you’ve got there!

  5. Thank you for mentioning my site David. I’m a big fan of your blog- it is definitely one of my favorites.

  6. David. Sweet. I still haven’t used Technorati’s favorites like I could. Some time soon. As it’s written, miles to go before I rest…

  7. [...] could use a few more Technorati favorites..  How about favoriting my site on the right, [...]

  8. Hi David!

Thanks so much for the mention! It was really kind of you.

To my knowledge, you’re the first one among my favorites to link back to the blogger who favorited them.

Your site is very informative and helpful. I’m glad the icon helped you.

  9. Thank you all for your kind comments. It makes the time I spend updating my blog worthwhile.
  10. David - BEAUTIFUL headline. Absolutely beautiful.

And you just got one more Technorati favorite.

On Instigator Blog I’ve only got the icon in the far right sidebar - maybe I should swing it in closer…

  11. Why thank you Ben. :)

This is one of the first posts I’ve created that I’ve thought to myself I can be truly specific.

Needless to say you’ve been a Technorati favourite of mine for some time now.

Regarding your Technorati icon, maybe it’s just me but I prefer the one I use over your slightly smaller version. I think it’s because mine mentions Technorati and shows their logo. It would be interesting to know which one is more effective at the end of the day.

  12. David - interesting suggestion re: the icon. I’m going to make the switch - let’s see what happens. (if the bigger one will fit in that sidebar.)

I’m also wondering if I should put the smaller one after each post if that would encourage people…

  13. Does your site automatically sign us up to receive emails for future posts?

  14. I hope it works more effectively for you Ben.

Paul, your email is only used to let you know about follow-up comments after one you make. There’s a check-box beneath each comment box asking if you want to be notified of comments after the one you make.

I just activated that plugin recently. Perhaps I should have the check-box unchecked by default? Does it bother you receiving an email when someone makes a comment on the same article you did?

No-one else has mentioned it, and you can easily ‘manage your subscriptions’ through this email (or above if you’re on my website now).

What you think matters though. Cheers.

  15. The bigger Technorati button didn’t fit in the narrow sidebar. So I’ll have to go back to the drawing board for now while I work on more pressing things.

I do like the button you’re using more though.

  16. Thanks for the mention David. No offense taken. If you had to say which aspect needed most attention, what would it be?

I like your site even better after the re-design. It is very clear. Maybe I need to take your comment about using images and photographs to heart.

    Thanks, Ian.

  17. Ben, I know it’s not easy setting aside time to develop your own blog. It takes time enough reading others then creating your own posts. All this on top of the day job. I’m sure you’ll be letting us know of any updates however. You reminded me to write an article about my recent re-design, so that those reading through RSS readers and email subscriptions would visit.

Thanks for your comments Ian. :)

If there was just one aspect that could be changed on your site it would be to give it a wider, less-deep header image. One that fills the space rather than one that looks like an after-thought.

After that, I’d move the category section to beneath the image of your name in the upper left side. That would immediately tell people what it is you blog about (if it’s not indicated in the header image).

It’d be a pleasure to help out in any way should you have some questions.

  18. Thanks for the feedback David. I can see what you mean with the header image now I look at it. I’ll have a think about a replacement image.
