Best designed website?

Leo Burnett website

When it comes to the first time you view a website, what do you look for? I suppose that hinges on the purpose of your visit. For instance, if you go to a news site you want to see the headlines first, and easy navigation. If you go to a shopping site you want a great search facility and obvious security. If you go to an advertising agency on the other hand, then what do you want?

I want originality.

There are precious few sites out there that pique my interest as much as that of Leo Burnett. Why? Because “big ideas come out of big pencils”. Have a look for yourself and let me know what you think.

I recently stumbled upon another site that makes use of a similar user experience - that of the pointer creating page patterns.

Here’s a screenshot of the wildcard.jp.org website:

It’s a much smaller site, but one that’s fun while it lasts.

Do you have a favourite?

  1. The mouse trail on wildcard is just awesome.

  2. I like organization in a blog or site!

  3. Hey,

I love your site, very professional. On my horizon (when I get back to Canada this November) are a masters in Creative Writing & night classes in graphic design, so it’s good to have “mentor” sites ; )

    Cheers.

  4. Leo Burnett’s site works great for an advertising agency.

I’m also collecting original sites, and even posted a list of sites with a unique navigation on my blog:

  5. David,
Hey, first of all—thanks for the comment on my blog!
Second- I’m happy that you found Leo Burnett’s site. I came across it a few months ago… maybe it was featured on the Communication Arts website? I can’t remember now. Anyways, I remember spending a lot of time playing around with that site- it’s really quite fascinating to me. Maybe because I’ve been attempting to teach myself all this flash actionscripting stuff and it really boggles my mind! Not only is it easy to use, but the originality of the navigation is fantastic!

  6. I’m in two minds about this!! Great concept - clean & tells a good story. Made me think these guys will come up with great ideas.

BUT my preference is for simple sights - no flash or animation of any kind and the pencil idea plants a seed in my mind that maybe if I used the agency I’d be steered down a “clever site” road.

Obviously up to the client to set out a tight brief but in my experience there are times when agencies want to show of their wares & abilities rather than provide me with what I want.

As you say though, the site really piques interest - good find

  7. These sites remind me of when I first came across 2advanced.com and neostream.com 2 years ago. They were sites which in my opinion set the standard for Flash sites.

While personally, I would not have my site designed all in flash, You just have to admire the originality of sites like leo burnett, wildcard, 2advanced and neostream. Besides, if you are bored, you could try using the pencil to draw a house at the leo burnett site or using your mouse to take out your anger on the mascot at the neostream site. :)

  8. Inspirationbit, thanks for the link to the inspired websites. I’ll check them out when I have some more time on my hands.

Also, your compliments are very much appreciated Eva. I’m glad you stopped by to view my blog.

Tolumi, I wouldn’t design a site in pure flash either. It’s not great for SEO. Besides, I’d need to learn a hell of a lot to get anywhere near those capabilities!

You bring up an interesting point Mark, about ending up with an all bells and whistles site when what you what is simplicity. You’re right though, the project brief is the all-important factor. If that’s set in stone then everyone knows what’s happening.

  9. Interesting site. Sure is fun to play with.

I think the last site I saw that really made me ‘oh & ah’ was GE Imagination Cubed And the real awe factor comes out when you realize you can be on the same canvas with other people remotely. When I found this site a while back, a friend and I wasted a good 3-4 hours playing around with it.

  10. Nice find Dawud! I might actually put that to use at some point when working with a client.

    Thanks :)

  11. For simplicity and tidyness, on a totally random subject, I saw this one today: http://www.marstonhotels.com/. I really like it. It just looks really properly done.

  12. Wow.. Great find there..

  13. Hey Pinksy, that Marston Hotels site does seem well constructed and user-friendly. The rotating flash images are obviously professionally taken too.

What I thought strange about it was how the designers chose to put a link at the foot of each page saying ‘Get Internet Explorer’. Why do you think someone would do that?

If a person is viewing the site on a PC, then by default they’ll be using IE. If they’re on a mac then they’ll be using Safari, which in my opinion is better than IE anyway.

  14. Yeah, I found that strange too. Anyone that knows anything about the web would surely not advertise IE, unless they use IE dependant code…

  15. When I go to a site I want to get straight to message– for instance, if it’s cluttered up with Adsense ads, I lose interest and leave quickly because I can’t find the purpose in the site. You don’t want to spend time trying to figure out the site.

  16. David! You do get around. Very interesting. Reminds me of the mouse trail script we first learned in C, with fractal like connectors instead of straight lines. I totally agree with Mark Wilson’s comment though. Lots of “Flash” is there content?

  17. David,

I found a link to your site and wanted to touch base. It turns out that I’m part of the team that built the back end functionality for Leo Burnett as the system is powered by our content management system. We’ve been quite busy recently so we haven’t had time to delve into our own site but that will be forthcoming over the next little while. the core offering of our firm is a CMS for flash and rich media and we use the burnett site as a showcase due to the global recognition it achieved.

I’ll be out of the office for the next little while on a business trip but feel free to touch base if you have any questions and I’ll be more than happy to fill you in on details.

    Regards,

    Jonathan

  18. Thanks for stopping by Jonathan.

I’ll send you a short email as I’m interested to know how user-friendly a Flash CMS actually is, and what capabilities can be incorporated.

This site is for a graphic designer turned food photographer. It is VERY clean and robust. It also has contact info and I am thinking about doing this for my portfolio site now that I have won some awards.

And why is it that photographers have the coolest sites?

  20. It’s nice, Tom. No doubt. Of course the great photography helps too.
