Aesop on design contests
Continuing from yesterday, what would Aesop say about the growing trend of design contests?

The Lioness
“Once when all the beasts were arguing among themselves as to which of the animals could produce the largest number of whelps at birth, they went to the lioness and asked her to settle the dispute.
‘And how many do you have at birth?’ they asked.
‘One,’ she said defiantly, ‘but that one is a lion.’”
No matter how much you have, never argue with quality.

Brilliant. Glad Aesop had it all figured out.
I love this – all too often we get caught up in doing as much as we can as quickly as we can and forget the joy and pride in doing one thing really well. That is what expertise is really about – having a deep understanding and ability to focus on creating something awesome. The best thing about this fable though is the way the lioness turns the issue around on the other animals.
Love these. I need to apply this to my work on so many levels. Thanks.
Great article I really like it! Though Lions often have larger litters, up to 6, depending on their health. http://www.honoluluzoo.org/lion.htm.
To stretch the metaphor, I’d say when resources are adequate, quantity and quality help make a stronger pride than quality alone.
For me, the beauty here is the understanding of one’s own worth. Applying that same interpretation to business, knowing your value instills confidence in your clients.
“but that one is a lion.” Really strong words! Slap me twice :)
