A brief thank you video
I’m cringing, but I’ve been talking about it for so long that I had to bite the bullet. Here’s my first video blog post, a small way to say thanks for all your visits and comments.
—
Update: 03 March 2011
Video removed. Sorry folks. I’ll work on another one soon.
—
The video was created using iMovie, and my MacBook’s built-in webcam/microphone. I exported the clip from iMovie to YouTube, then embedded the YouTube file here on my site. I figured that was probably the easiest way to go about it. I uploaded the video to Vimeo, which seems a much better option than YouTube.
If you have any tips or suggestions for future video posts, do let me know.

Got all excited, then was greeted with a “This is a private video …” message. Do I need to do somethiing else to see it?
Sorry, buddy. I think I uploaded it as a ‘personal’ video by mistake. I’ll fix that shortly, then retweet. Cheers for letting me know, though.
Cool.
Maybe you could introduce a couple of videos/screencasts showing the importation of logo from pen and paper to a more finalised piece and other little bits of information.
Yay. Finally a video post! It was great to put a voice to the face. Can’t wait for more.
I’ve thought about doing a video post also, but people have a hard time understanding me in person. They say I talk way too fast for them to follow.
Rich,
Screencasts could definitely add to my blog. That’ll take more learning, perhaps using Camtasia? Good idea, cheers.
Mark,
I think it’s always good to put a voice to the face. Especially when we rarely meet our online friends.
Dustin,
I remember when I was lining up my internship in the states. It was basically sealed through email, and I was yet to talk to the company on the phone, when my contact got all worried as someone told him people from Ireland are difficult to understand. He arranged a phone call asap, but it worked out okay. :)
TV Presenter in the making there David, good work!
David,
Thanks for the personal good morning :-)
Hope you have a good day too!
Pam
Nice work. I know what accent to read your blogs in now. You’ll have your own chat show in no time. I don’t think I’m brave enough to be on film. Look forward to more.
Doesn’t sound amateurish to me at all. Your voice is easy to listen to as well.
What sort of future video posts can we expect? A day in the life of a freelance graphic designer? Or perhaps some mid-night rants about bad clients?
Great job David! Look forward to more.
I understood the thank-you part, but everything else was just gibberish. Haha, only kidding, bud. Great to see your personality come through. Take care!
Haha, let’s not get ahead of ourselves there, Gareth.
Pam, you’re very welcome, and thanks.
Wes, yep, good ol’ Norn Irish. Hope it’s easy enough to understand.
Roy,
Good question, and I’m glad my accent is easy to understand. A rant could be quite amusing. Maybe not the best idea for attracting new business, but I’ll keep it in mind. I’m thinking about further videos giving quick tips about logo design, but like Rich mentions (above), screencasts might be more appropriate.
You had me there for a second, Kevin. Haha.
Well it’s a start isn’t it? Heh heh, as others have said it’s interesting to add a vocal to your online voice David. Keep them coming mate!
Nice to meet you. I like the personal touch.
I can’t remember when was my last comment in this website but I do read your updates via Google Reader. Like always, keep up the good work!
I’ve started my Open Interview few days ago just to share my experience with friends and at the same time playing around with iMovie.
Thanks for sharing the video!
We do indeed all start somewhere, Steve. If you ask me, the best place is at the bottom.
Alice, I was hoping this would appear more personal than the average blog post, so thanks for saying.
Rafie, your interview idea is a good one. I often answer reader questions using text only, but as a video could be better.
Very well done, David! You’re a natural. Looking forward to more video posts and yeah, Rich is definitely on to something there! ;)
Off topic: what’s that chair you are using and is it any good? I want to replace mine (neglected this for way too long), cause my back is killing me, but I can’t decide. Thanks!
For the Q&A – I am inspired by Chris Pirillo, a prolific blogger, CNN Tech editor, etc.
He recorded so many videos sharing great software, tips and answer questions from people around the world. I remembered one thing he said that when you share with people, you actually turn down your ego and be more down-to-earth.
I am looking forward to seeing more videos. Have a nice day!
Wow. Was not expecting you to sound like that at all. I got a good chuckle at your accent, i don’t hear them very often, it was definitely strange to me. lol
Nice one David. You will have to choose a different location each time!! Props for doing a video blog, it would have taken me 4 – 5 times before I would have even posted it :] But like Adrian said – a natural!
Adrian,
Here’s the chair I’m using. I’d recommend it, too, and know how you feel with back pain. Hazard of the job, eh?
Rafie,
I’ll have to check him out, and thanks for catching that broken link for me.
Alison,
There aren’t too many of us in the world with the same accent, and if it brought a chuckle, well, I’m happy with that reaction. :)
Justin,
A different location? Nice idea. I’m sure I could get some good scenic footage from around these parts.
Thanks a lot, David! I thought this was the one, I had my eye on it last time I went to IKEA. It’s an investment I should have made long ago and while some might not agree, I came to realize it’s more important than any computer hardware. :)
How nice to put a real person with the blog. And your accent! Swoon.
Thanks to you David, it has been very nice to hear you. I wrote you some time ago in order to let me use some examples of yours for my students. Metaphors and Rhetoric points worked out very well…
you have a good day as well!
itzel, from Mexico
I think you did fine for a first-time video blog. I thought the opening message was a pretty nice touch too. I say keep ‘em coming!
Lovely accent! (Then again, anything is better than the usual accent we dutch tend to speak english with.)
Altough youtube is great for attracting the masses, I’d like to recommend vimeo.com in case you need quality movies.
But a great initiative!
Hi David!
I was wondering when we’ll be able to see some Audio/Visual from you! Great stuff! So sincere, and encouraging. You brought an instant smile to my face and warmed our hearts! …and I totally digg your accent. I won’t be able to read your blog posts without hearing it in your voice. You continue to inspire me with all you have to offer, and the way you add value to your web/blog community. Keep it up + keep it coming! Nuff respect!
S+
Cool accent and not bad for the first video post, couldn’t tell any nerves so don’t worry. Inspires me to do one of my own. I bought a great webcam a few months a go for a live lecture that I did to an Indian University on logo design and haven’t used it since… Maybe, I will soon :)
It’s nice to finally see a video of ya.
I never knew you interned in the U.S. And you originally got the job by email? Wow… I wish I could do that to work in another country as well.
I’ve never really heard that the Irish are difficult to understand. I can clearly understand you. ;-)
Great to hear you, as others have said. I too hear you loud and clear, and now I know what you sound like when I read your posts. Haha.
My wife and I love the Irish accent and we plan to visit Ireland some day. Oh, our daughter’s name, Ellie, was chosen from the “Irish baby names” list, too. =]
Nice work – I’m definitely with Rich, it would be great to see you in action!
David ~
It’s clear that in part, your success is due to your personality which I found refreshingly sensitive & engaging this morning as I watched your clip from my mobile. What a surprise to see you being so charmingly open about feeling vulnerable. I have to say that my user experience of viewing your message as a full screen mobile video was very immediate, very direct. It’s still shocking to think about what will be possible in communication and sharing emotional experience in the near future.
Ha ha … Great!!!
Just want to say I love your design and have read your blog for a year. Please keep doing the great jobs!!
Looks great, David! Looking forward to future vlogs!
Great job moving on to the use of ‘vlogging’. How much work was it for you?
Whenever I try to record a video I just end up making mistakes, I find it more comfortable to write short blogs.
Thanks to you too David! I found your website a few months ago and you have some great resources on here. Looking forward to new videos.
-Sonia in Austin, TX (Philadelphia and San Juan)
David Airey: Graphic artist, logo designer extraordinaire and now… movie star!
I have to say I was disappointed by the lack of special effects (IE lasers shooting out of your eyes would have been a nice touch)
JK Great video post, very brave & very much appreciated Mr. Approachable :)
Aw! Very sweet. Lovely to see an animated version of you David. Look forward to future video posts.
Adrian,
There’s no denying the importance of a good desk chair. It’s like a good mattress and pillow. For all the time we spend sitting / sleeping, it makes sense to invest.
Leslie,
Ever thought of moving to Northern Ireland? There are more than a million of us with the same accent. :)
itzel,
I can’t actually remember helping you out, sorry, but whatever it was, I’m glad it worked to your advantage, and thanks for dropping by again.
Avery,
It was surprising how intuitive iMovie is — very easy to get to grips with, so the intro text was a snip.
Tjeerd,
Funny you should mention vimeo.com. I visited Rafie’s blog (who commented above) to see his video blog post, and he made use of vimeo. I thought it looked a little more pro.
SteHan,
Thanks very much! That’s all there is to say.
Jacob,
Did you record your lecture? That’d make for an interesting post.
Toby,
The internship was unpaid, which makes it a little less successful, and because of which, I needed to work another job to bring in some money (as a waiter). Still, I had a fantastic time in the states, and would love to return someday soon.
Rob,
Ellie’s a nice name. How old is she? When you make it over, be sure to drop in and I’ll buy you a Guinness.
Scarlett (Perfect Circle),
Did the video look okay on your mobile? My phone’s quite old (I only use it for calls / texts) so I haven’t seen how it appears. Regardless, thanks for the kind words.
lars,
It wasn’t much trouble at all. In fact, creating the video was a lot easier than I thought it’d be. Apple make things easy.
AzAkers,
That’s funny (movie star). Sorry about the lack of lazers and special effects. I’ll work on it for next time, though, so you can let me know how I improve.
Liz, Sonia, Chris, Charles, Rob O,
More encouragement! I told you you’re all great. :)
Ha! I actually lived in Cork for 4 months during college (I attended University College Cork). Lovely country, fabulous accents. You know Americans are suckers for an accent.
I think the best part of the whole video is the opening still shot. I think youtube automatically takes the opening shot from the center mark of your video. Classic facial expression. :)
It’s quite strange to only hear the voice of someone you’ve been *listening* to for a year, only after a year.
*well sort of, reading your blog is listening to your views – right?
Hello from Spain.
Your blog and topics are very helpful for me.
Now it’s nice to hear you.
Thanks to you!
Video posts – good idea – And thanks for being so personal!
Hi David,
Your website and blog were already excellent! Still, I appreciate the personal touch of your video. It is also quite brave of you.
Really good job!
Take care -
You don’t have a typical Irish accent, do you? I had absolutely no problems understanding you.
Anyways, it was great to hear and see you talk, David. Voice & visuals added a third dimension to your online personality and just expanded on what a nice and sweet guy you are. I’m always impressed how you go an extra mile for your readers, so no wonder we all love you so much :)
Look forward to seeing many more video posts from you.
David – Cool stuff! Next up how about a time lapse video showing you sketching out some logo ideas for your next project. ;-)
I won’t forget that and will definitely take you up on that Guinness! =]
Thanks! Ellie will be 9 months old on April 15. And happy belated birthday to you, by the way.
You seem like a very humble guy and I love the accent!
Nice video ;)
I didn’t know you’d seen the light and moved to the Mac tho!
When did this happen? Or did you always and I missed it? Hmmm
Very endearing David! Given your super success, it’s nice to see that your also quite a down to earth, humble guy. Will keep tuned for more :)
I know this guy from somewhere… Just… can’t… place it. ;P
Thats a good start, David. I’m looking forward to future productions.
I noted comments about Screencasts and I can say that I’ve personally used Jing (Camtasia’s “little brother”) on Mac for a few inter-office tutorials I’ve done. It’s worked wonders. My only qualm with it is the audio quality isn’t quite as perfecto as I’d like it, but that could just be a mic issue rather than the software. None the less, perhaps Jing could work as a quick way to test screencasting before you throw money at it?
Thanks for sharing with us. Looking forward to more.
><
I forgot to include the link to Jing. My apologies for the double post.
http://www.jingproject.com/
Heart be still!
Thanks David! I am sure that as much as we have inspired you, you have surely inspired us.
You can sing me to sleep anytime!
~Deirdre
David, you are a far more brave man than most. Your website has inspired me to put a blog onto my own site, but I don’t know if I’d be able to bring myself to do a video blog!
Now the big question is (remembering your blog about replies that never saw the light of day), how many inappropriate responses are you filtering out here? You’re quite a handsome man, and your accent is very swoon-worthy. I imagine you’re driving all the ladies insane.
Hi David,
No problem understanding you! :) I actually did some work for an Irishman who’s living and doing business in the States. He’s been in the States for a while now (10+ years) and his accent is much thicker than yours! lol
Anyways, cheers! Or should I say Sláinte!?
BTW, I like how you threw a “malarky” in there. ;)
David – head down to Donaghadee pier for your next webcast – frame it with the lighthouse in the background – sweet. Very gracious of you to thank your posters and lurkers – you’re so generous with your expertise, advice and bonhomie, I’ve learned a hell of a lot since I’ve popped your site on my Bookmarks bar – ‘fair play til ye’ as they say in your neck of the woods.
That was nice David. Thankyou.
You’ve been such a great help to me since I first subscribed to your blog. I guess I only ever thought about what you’re providing me as a reader and never really gave much thought as to what I was providing you.
And yes, you’re definitely an approachable type of guy.
Grace+Peace
Jasmine
Great video david…….
we are looking at you for such nice videos in future as well………
you are really a brave person
Congrats on your first video blog post!
Its so nice to finally to watch a video of a cute, passionate, proficient and (a lil bit) nervous David Airey… :)
Wish you all the best of the best for Logo Design Love and in your future endeavors. Cya!
~MOHIB
Nice job! It’s so weird to think that people in other countries(with accents) are good designers. :-) My design buddies and I are all American born and raised.
Nice seeing the transition from written word to video post. I had no trouble understanding you but I had a boyfriend from Northern Ireland years ago so maybe that’s why. You definitely sound like you’re from the North … and was there a hint of Scots in the accent too? ;)
I was going to mention vimeo, but Tjeerd got there first :) Looks like it’s worth checking out, especially if you end up doing lots of these and you want to publish them just on your blog.
It would also be interesting to see how much time you save by talking on camera instead of putting together a written blog post.
Thank YOU for taking the time to share your work and your experience with US!
David,
Well done. Keep ‘em coming. I’ll be staying tuned to see what direction you take this.
Paul.
Antonea,
That opening still is my favourite part too. The more I look like a dork on the internet, the less I need to worry when it happens in person.
Mokokoma,
As long as it doesn’t spoil the experience from here on in. :)
Vivien,
There’s a fair difference in accent between the north and south of Ireland. Mine’s pretty diluted after living away for a while, and I probably toned it down the most after interning state-side when I was 21. I’ll work on another short video before too long — glad you approve.
Aaron,
That time-lapse idea’s a great one, but a bit beyond my computer skills. Something to consider for the future.
Rob,
Thanks for the birthday wishes, and I hope little Ellie’s keeping well.
Shaun,
Not too far back, actually. The time had come for a new computer, as my old one couldn’t handle the webcam I bought. The cam went back to the shop, and I headed for the Apple store.
Brandon,
I’ll definitely check out Jing, thanks. I remember Camtasia looking quite complex — my friend uses it to receive poker tutorials from a talented player in the Netherlands.
Deirdre,
What would you like me to sing? I’ll prepare a custom video.
Anna,
Actually not filtering out any comments on this one, surprisingly! Oh, and you made me blush.
Matt,
Couldn’t let it slide without some sort of colloquialism, but sadly, my near non-existent Spanish is stronger than my Gaelic.
Si,
Funny you should mention the lighthouse. I was there last week taking wedding photos of my aunt and her husband. It’d make a great backdrop, and it’s great your visits to my site have been worthwhile.
Tracey,
That’d make a good topic (speed of video posts compared with text / images). As for any hint of Scots, not sure about that. I’ve never thought of myself as someone who heads to another country and picks up the accent, but after nine years it’s certainly possible.
Thanks for the continued feedback, everyone. I didn’t think the post would cause as much of a response, so sorry to those I haven’t had time to address individually — got to get back to some work-related emails now.
Oh the joy, the accent, the nerves, the wandering eyes and the accent. Instant favourite ;)!
Great to finally hear you David,
Cheers!
it seems so strange seeing my boyfriend on tv! hope all the attention doesn’t go to your head :-) very proud of you davey x
I was wondering if you were ever going to do this. I think it’s a good idea for sure. Nice to hear your voice. All the best!
You look & sound exactly like I imagined you would! Nice touch & thank you for the video :)
Hey David…you welcome! :P
Looking forward to what these future casts may hold, as cheesy as it sounds, you are a big inspiration for myself…so this is exciting.
May I also second the Vimeo idea. The quality is much better and I think would serve more of the purpose considering the audience.
btw- You kinda sound like Craig Ferguson…and that guy is awesome!
No, we should be the one to thank YOU David, really. You’re website has been really helpful and inspiring. But thank you for the video and you are very much welcome. Keep on.
Hello David,
Wow. That was a brave thing. First I was surprised, after I thought I could not do it, after I started to think what is it good for but actually there is a huge potential in this “video game”, the question is are you going to introduce it as a regular thing or it was just an experiment?
Thanks.
Szabi
Hows the Mac transition gone for you? Are you missing anything on Windows yet?
Regarding screen capturing software:
I’m not trying to put down the Jing suggestion as I’d never even heard of it before that comment let alone tried it.
I have used ScreenFlow for Mac though and it’s fantastic, 100times better than Camtasia and only $99. It’s got a great reputation and is pretty much the industry standard. Definitely worth the at least playing with the trial version imo.
http://www.telestream.net/screen-flow/overview.htm
Nice, David! Looking forward to your future video posts.
That’s a start! I appreciate all the efforts you put into this blog. I’m sure it isn’t too easy.
Armin,
I’ll see if I can control those wandering eyes in future. :)
James,
It was probably a year ago when I first said I should do this, so it’s overdue, and I’m glad you think it’s a good idea.
Brad,
Yep, I’ll give Vimeo a shot, but who’s this Craig Ferguson? Do you mean the Scottish host of the Late Late Show? (Had to look him up there:)
Szabi,
I’ll see what else I can come up with, and may try something like Rafie already has, where he answers reader questions on video. I think that could be nicer than typing a response?
Shaun,
Personally, I like working on both Windows and Apple’s OSX, and as you know, the software’s the same across each. There’s no denying how slick the MBP design is, though. Thanks for the ScreenFlow tip. That’s another I’ll look into, and hadn’t previously heard of it.
This takes a lot of courage, hats off to you. I do not even appear in my own gravatar so I doubt I will ever reach this point with my blog. Maybe I could find a stand in. Well done on moving forward with the internet and exploring all it’s potential.
Hi David,
For sure it is a nice idea. Also when you are introducing a new logo design I think it can be interesting to do that through a short video.
All the best,
Szabi
David,
I just saw your video blog. Its too good to be personal and makes you know the person as he is. You’ve got a good thing going. Keep it up! Expecting more from you.
Chamma, Graphic Designer,
Coimbatore, India.
We tried recording the lecture however there were some glitches with the sound so that was unfortunate however we did get quite a few pictures from it.
David, I have enjoyed reading your posts for the past year – you are brilliant and your style is to be envied. But now I am completely distracted by your hotness! How am I suppose to learn anything going foward?
Just thought I would let you know… I have been using an application called ScreenCast for tutorials and screen casts. You might wanna check it out if you decide to continue the video posts. BTW, nice job.
“Yep, I’ll give Vimeo a shot, but who’s this Craig Ferguson? Do you mean the Scottish host of the Late Late Show? (Had to look him up there:)”
Yup, that is the guy.
Hi David,
I am a graphic designer and live in Dubai, I discovered your site by chance four days back and God am I hooked or what. I just cant stop reading your articles, your tips. Its just one helluva site for us designers. And like someone above said we should be the one thanking you really for sharing your thoughts and ideas with us. Its just such a great inspiration. Please keep up the excellent work……in sharing your wisdom.
Namrita
Hay David, what’s going on? I take a couple of days off from the Mac and you go all high-tech on us readers…what a difference a days makes ;)
It’s a great video ― a may I say how strange it was to watch it. I suppose the impression I held of you was different to what I expected. The photo of yourself and the posts you write were all my brain had to go on. Now your on video, “David Airey becomes more real”.
I had a similar idea to do a video like this about 6 month back, but forgot all about it. I think embedding a YouTube vid is a great idea as well.
Thanks a lot, Steve. I think there’s a lot to be said for ‘putting yourself out there’ — for me anyway, when I talk plenty about being transparent.
Szabi,
Introducing a new portfolio entry is another way to use video. Good idea, and one I might just take you up on.
lena,
Haha, your money for that comment is in the post.
Joshua,
Thanks for the tip. That’s another bit of software I’ll be sure to check out.
Namrita,
Hooked eh? That’s great for me, but not so good for you. Here’s hoping you don’t get fed up before too long. ;)
Andrew,
I knew you were taking a little break, so thought I’d surprise you by dispelling any false impressions. Hehe. Funny how it was strange for you to watch (me too). It’d probably be equally strange to watch a video of you welcoming readers. Go for it, I say.
Yeah David, I may just do that :)
You sound nothing like I imagined! Oh, and for screen recording, IShowU HD kicks ass.
You sound a BIT like Ewan McGregor
David,
Your message seemed great to me. Actually even better than many so-called experts (it was not amateurish at all).
Keep up the good work.
Great start to your video blogging. My advice would be to get as many done quickly as you can to get over the initial nerves and then you can settle into just focusing on giving great content.
Its good to see the man behind the blog!
Hi David,
In case you missed it, I have just done my first welcome & thank you video also. You got me motivated to get around to actually doing it… http://justcreativedesign.com/2009/04/20/welcome-thank-you-video/
Thanks for the screen-recording recommendation, Jonathan. I’ve got plenty of options now, which is great, and hope to work with one before too long.
Nathan,
Ewan McGregor? Not sure about that. Have you seen his Long Way Round and Long Way Down DVD collections? I think they’re both excellent.
Juan, Chris, Jamal, thanks very much, and Jacob, I hope your video helps create a stronger bond with your readers.
Cheers everyone.
Great video!!
Nice to “hear you”!
Great video. Please do more.
I check your blog just about everyday- Going back reading all of your posts, learning from the bonafide advice and suggestions you offer.
I mentioned before, I’m pretty new at all of this, but since I found your blog I’ve made improvements that never would have been possible (or thought of) prior.
I believe your blog is the best on the web.
Keep up the good work. Nice to meet you.
Callie
Thanks very much, Ross, Callie.
Hello David, I agree with the other comments it is nice to be able to put a voice to the face. Just wanted to say well done as I am sure it is not easy or comfortable to do a film but you did a good job. It is a nice touch and am sure it will help to win that little bit more trust from your sites visitors.
Hi Matthew. I’m sure I’ll become more used to talking to myself as time goes on. Glad you appreciate the video. Cheers.
I don’t subscribe to many blogs but yours is one I never miss, not just for your wonderful artistic gifts but the fact that you are so gracious and interactive with your readers. Great intro video!
Why thank you, Darlanne.
Now, how much did we agree on?
hi, my name is jaba, im from tbilisi, i’m graphic designer too and i learned lot from your posts, i just wanted to thank you for your suggestions.
Thank you for stopping by my little blog to leave a comment. I watched your video and you certainly seem approachable! I’m not sure I’d leave those kind words on Twitter, otherwise. ;-)
By the way, your accent…. let’s just say I’m smitten.
Haha David, check’s in the mail. ;)
I agree Kristin!
David your personality really does come out nicely in written words, something not easy to always do but I’d love to see more videos, even perhaps of describing a logo process would be great to watch/hear.
Kristin,
You’re very welcome. I hope the site’s working out well for you. We all love an accent different from our own, don’t we?
Darlanne,
You’re sending compliments my way, then paying me for the pleasure?! I think I’ve found a niche in the market. ;)
You are very brave, I think video blogs are fab, but I’m far too gutless to do one :) Maybe one day I’ll gather up the courage… perhaps if I do it with a bag over my head, ha ha!!
What would be nice, would be to see your desk behind you …. normal stuff like drawings, your pc, coffee cup… to personalise the feel of the video and make it feel more colourful/interesting to look at.
Come on, you know we want to pry into your life more than to see a blank wall ;) ho ho.
You’re right, Amanda. A more interesting background would help, but I can’t show my computer, as the web cam is built into my MacBook Pro.
It’d be great to see you do likewise one day soon!
Funny you should say that because I’m buying a new desktop soon and was thinking of buying something with an integrated camera in it.
Then I realised that if I wanted to show something in the room it would make it awkward/impossible so I decided that instead I’ll get a seperate camera so I have more flexibility.
My laptop has an integrated camera as well (most new ones may do?) but I don’t use my laptop for my main working, I work on my desktop 99% of the time.
I might get a digital video camera one of these days. Then I could report from the beach!
We have one of those :-))
It’s my husband not me that buys all these things, he’s technology obsessed, if there is technology he has to have it, the house is practically buzzing from all the electromagnetic activity and when he goes on holiday he carries what he calls his ‘tech bag’.
Recently it proved useful though to be fair – he recorded some Thai Boxing moves at our daughters Thai Boxing class, so that we could practice them at home with her and avoid the issue where we keep forgetting the moves. She has a grading coming up.
A video blog on the beach would be cool!
With all the house moving I’ve done recently, it takes a special product for me to add it to my collection. The less I have, the better. :)
Thai boxing classes? Nice one. I hope her grading goes well.
I think she should do well in her grading, she’s a hard worker :-)) She’s been doing it since she was 4yrs old.
At the end of this year she should take her top grading (red band), at at that point she’s allowed to start teaching others in the class, which she will totally love – she’s only 7! So proud :-))))
A teacher at 7?! That’s amazing, Amanda! I’d be very proud too.
Amanda – do you still go on Ecademy? Do you get much design work from being on there?
Yes indeed I do still go on Ecademy, and yes I do get leads and clients from Ecademy. The amount I get tends to relate to how much time I put into it.
I spend less time there than I used to so I get less of my clients from Ecademy nowadays, but at one point over 50% of my clients came from Ecademy in the days when I was on there for at least an hour a day.
Hi David.
I just recently discovered your site and I became an instant fan. I’ve been doing graphic design for three years but never had a formal background in a design school. I had the chance to enroll in a graphic design certificate course for three months and actually finished with honors but I’m wondering if you would advice me to go back to school and take a degree course all over again.
Thanks.
Mark
Hi Mark, there’s no denying that a good design degree will help, but whether it’s necessary depends entirely upon your current skills, and how motivated you are towards self-teaching. Another option is to spend shorter periods of time gaining experience through internships. If you can, take a degree, but whatever you choose, all the best with it.
Hey David,
Man I’ve been reading your blog for a while and I was waiting to hear what you sounded like since I like the way you write – its kinda calming. I was reading a post about your own logo design process and found this. Love your blog. I actually came up on your site by reading up on all the spec-watch stuff and logodesignlove. (Both of which I read since I just recently discovered 99designs and attempted it and got really annoyed by the whole thing.)
I’m trying to come up with my own logo but right now I only have a preliminary draft. I’m also trying to come up with a wordpress blog of my own (I used to be really good at wordpress but then I lost track of it for a couple of years due to my college studies).
I follow your blog regularly. =) Thank you for all the great posts.
P.S. It’s awesome you’ve been to India. I’m from India but I came to the states when I was only 6… went back last year and it was amazing and quite different.
Hello Genkai,
Thanks for reading my blog, and you’re very welcome for the updates. Enjoy the week.
Hej David! I like your blog. Your first video was great as well. I found you from a link at monaevedesignfarm.com. I have so much to read (and learn). Hey from Sweden (Gothenburg, west coast).
Wow, I’m SO going to have that accent in my head the next time I read your blog posts. Props to believing that the web can still be personal and human, and great job on the first video :)
Hello Johan. Good of you to say how you found me. I trust all’s well over there? I want to visit Sweden at some point. Photos of Scandinavia in general are inspiring.
Ash, the props are appreciated. Cheers buddy.
Damn I wish I had the nuts to do a video blog.
Good for you sir. Look forward to seeing the next one.
Thanks for all the great posts. Have a great 2010!
